Measuring whether communication is producing commercial value
Reach and engagement describe attention. They rarely describe the commercial return communication was funded to deliver.

Reach Describes Attention. It Does Not Describe Return.
Reach and engagement metrics answer a narrow question well: did people see or interact with the communication? They answer a much more important question poorly: did the communication move the commercial outcome it was funded to influence.
The gap between the two is where a significant share of advertising investment is evaluated on the wrong basis.
A more complete evaluation asks what reach and engagement alone cannot answer:
- Did the message reach the audience the organisation actually needed to influence?
- Did it change awareness, preference or intent among that audience specifically?
- Is there a credible link between the campaign and a shift in commercial behaviour?
- How did the message perform against the competitive alternative the audience was also seeing?
- What would have happened to the outcome without this investment?
Attention is a precondition for commercial value. It is not evidence of it.
Strategic Relevance
Does the communication support a defined commercial or strategic objective?
Audience Resonance
Is the proposition meaningful to the specific audience the organisation needed to move?
Competitive Distinction
Does the message hold a credible point of difference against what the audience was also seeing?
Commercial Contribution
Is there a defensible link between the campaign and a change in awareness, preference or response?
Evidence Before the Next Media Commitment
Dune & Palm evaluates advertising and communication effectiveness through audience relevance, message differentiation, channel suitability and measurable strategic outcomes — independent of the team that created or bought the campaign.
The purpose is not to judge creative taste. It is to establish, with reasonable evidence, whether the investment is contributing to the outcome it was intended to produce.
The Question Is Not Whether the Campaign Was Noticed.
It is whether it changed something that matters commercially. Reach and engagement are the easiest numbers to report — and the least sufficient basis on which to justify the next investment.
